Flock

Knut is no longer a cuddly little polar bear at the Berlin zoo, but a lumbering teenager. However Flock is the new star and in this house we point out the latest video or newspaper shots of her. My housemate even bought her son tissue in a box decorated with polar bears (and me a box with penguins). We even have polar bear toilet paper which makes routine chores worth smiling about.

Did you know that polar bears get polaroids from sitting around all day on their ice holes?

Dear Expatwriter.

Should I become a blogger?

Over the past few months I’ve been doing a little research to see what is out there in cyberspace. I’ve read a lot, yawned more often than I thought possible and, on rare occasions, been entertained.

As an Anglo Swiss living near Geneva, I was drawn to those blogs originating here – Would they have interesting stories to tell?

Alas. Nothing, zero, zilch, diddly-squat. I’ve read about people’s friends and friends of their friends and they are all so boring. I’ve read about shopping trips, cat worming, children’s schooling, cooking, restaurants, ski outings and the rest. But I have rarely read anything remotely interesting, provocative, sexy, politically incorrect, useful or funny. Why?

You write well and your text flows smoothly, but what is the point of putting your skill to use banging out monotonous, unimaginative tales without plot or conclusion? This comment is not meant to be destructive or to dissuade a writer. It is for my own edification and, hopefully, it will help me find a direction and an audience for my blog… should it ever gets off the ground.

Have you ever wondered why nobody comments on your blogs? I would find that very depressing as blogs should be used for dialogue or contretemps. A writer writes to be read – or is it just to fulfill an ego?

My old adversary Jean-Luc Godard once stupidly told me that he was happy his films played to almost empty cinemas because it showed the lack of intellect of the general public.

I shall continue reading your blog because, as I said earlier, I appreciate your fluidity – and that doesn’t come easy. I like to think of my uneducated style as “The Knack”, or is that a bit pretentious? What do you think?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Cushdie Bok.
